The Konobon Gallery

Introduction

The Konobon gallery is incorporated into the white Istrian stone that gives it a special exclusiveness. We can observe it as three separate units linked into a unique whole. In the first part with about 300 exhibits it presents the story of Mediterranean cultures through an exhibition on bread, olive oil and wine. In the central circular area there is an art gallery and the last part is our wine shop where you can savour and buy homemade products from this area.

"The interior of the exhibition with carefully selected exhibits continues from the period of prehistory towards examples from the Roman and Medieval period. It consists of numerous presses, threshing machines, boxes, local tools and technologies from different periods. All this is beautifully incorporated into a stone ambience with a subtly chosen illumination, that gives the entire setting a certain warmth and makes your stay very pleasant."

Baredine represent the central part around cultivated vineyards and olive orchards, which are present in this area from Antiquity and the Medieval period until today. After the Romans conquered Istria the fertile red soil (Baredine) became part of the roman colony Colonia iulia Parentium. Over old roads, which connected the sorrounding buildings of the Histri, the prehistorical inhabitants of Istria new roads were built. The most famous one among them, the Via Flavia, was only one kilometer to the west of Baredine and it connected Pula (Pola) with Poreč (Parentium) and led to Triest (Tergeste) and further. The second significant road, which was also used for trading and transportation went from the sea coast (Červar and Loron) over Baredine and led into the inner part of Istria. In Červar and Loron, already in the 1st century there were olive proccesing factories and ovens used to make products out of ceramics. The most important products were amphorae and olive oil and wine, which was stored and transported in them. The Roman poet Martial speaks about how Istria was famous for producing first-class olive oil famous all over the world: „Cordoba, you that are more fertile than the oily Venafra and perfect as the oil from an Istrian amphora“. Numerous monuments witness this period. In a museum in Poreč there is a monument pedestal from the 1st century dedicated to Tito Volusi Hermes showing an olive harvest on one side and grape harvest motifs on the other side. Next to a resting station on the Via Flavia in the nearby Dvori, explorers have found a consular inscription from the beginning of the second century dedicated to Liber, the god of vine. This is why the area around Baredine has been famous for olive oil, wine and gastronomic delicacies from the period of Antiquity until today. It is a place where you can enjoy the beauty of the landscape as well as the incredible world of the underground karst.
